1. Origine principale : latine et symbolique
Olivier vient du latin olivarius, qui signifie "cultivateur d’oliviers" ou "celui qui récolte les olives". Par extension, il est directement lié à l’olivier, l’arbre.
Dans l’Antiquité et la tradition judéo-chrétienne, l’olivier est un symbole très fort :
• Paix : la colombe de Noé revient avec un rameau d’olivier pour annoncer la fin du déluge.

2. Origine germanique possible
Certains linguistes rattachent Olivier au germanique Alfihar, composé de alf "elfe" + hari "armée" → "armée des elfes". Cette version a été popularisée au Moyen Âge par la Chanson de Roland avec le chevalier Olivier, compagnon de Roland. C’est cette épopée qui a vraiment lancé le prénom en France vers le XIe-XIIe siècle.
3. Fête et popularité
• Fête : le 12 juillet, en l’honneur de saint Olivier Plunket, archevêque irlandais du XVIIe siècle.
• Popularité : Très courant au Moyen Âge grâce à la Chanson de Roland. Il revient fort dans les années 1960-1980 en France. Aujourd’hui il est classique et toujours bien porté.
